This weekend, the “RRD SUP SOMO WAVE CONTEST” took place in Somo. On Saturday, the competition began early in the morning with the first qualifying heats where especially the competitors from the Canaries stood out.

The first semifinal took place in one foot glassy surf and Pablo Valencia (Canary Islands) gave his rivals no chance with consistently high scores. The fight for the second place was very close between Xavi Masdeval and Ramon Pastor, both Catalan (WINDPARADISE team), with Xavi ultimately reaching the final.

The second semifinal was led by Felix Palermo from Tenerife. The second place would be eventually be taken by the Windsurfing World Champion (Wave), Iballa Ruano (Gran Canaria), Starboard, that surprised the spectators with his radical surfing taking out two of the events favorites Eduardo Díaz (Gran Canaria), from Naish & Second Reef, and Xisco Sureda (Mallorca), from Pepper.

The first final was the girls, where Iballa Ruano gave no options to any of her rivals. In second place was the French Carole Lombard (living in Tarifa) , in third place was Malen Riera from Mallorca, and fourth was Sara Ramos from Northwind. A little after 11am  the the men’s final took place, Felix Palmero took on a different wave called “El Barco” but wasn’t lucky with this strategy and finished fourth. The fight for the win was left for the remaining surfers, that took on the main wave “entre campings”. The Catalan Xavi Masdevall with a great backside surfing finally finished third. The first place was a close battle between Iballa Ruano that managed to get the best wave of the contest, but at the end it was Pablo Valencia from Fuerteventura who took home the win with very consistent surfing.

The organizers, Northwind SUP Kite & Surf School and Sunset School, would like to thank all the sponsors that have made the event possible. The “SOMO SUP WAVE CONTEST” has been sponsored by the brand RRD and the City of Ribamontán Sea, under the protection of the Cantabrian Federation of Surf and Spanish, and support of Norbega SA, La Mar Salada and Toro Loco.
