Are you looking for a totally awesome place to paddle? How about the Virgin Islands? They are a stunningly beautiful collection of about 70 islands, inlets and Cays in the Caribbean that are incredibly close together. They were an El Dorado for pirates in former times, with their hidden and unaccounted bays, perfect to hide and wait for the Spanish Ships that were loaded to the brim with gold from the new world.
While the Boga SUP Yoga Board was somewhat of an exotic toy a few years ago, most of the big brands now have SUP Yoga Boards in their lineup.

Enjoying the last Summer days here in Europe – why not going on another SUP city trip?
Steve Teihotaata of Bora Bora is relatively new to SUP, he has only been stand up paddling for about half a year but he made a name for himself by winning the 132 miles SUP 11 City Tour 2015 – 5 straight wins every day on the Mistral Vortex 14′.
How is that possible you wonder? Well while he is new to SUP, he is not new to paddling. He is one of the world’s best V1 and OC1 paddlers, winning the Super Aito 2010, the Te Aito 2011, 2012 and the OC1 Solo Moloka’i in 2012, 2014 and 2015, finishing 2nd in the Super Aito 2015, by only 8 seconds to Jérusalemy Kevin Ceran.
Mistral signed him for SUP
Steeve Teihotaata was known to me through his OC1 wins of Molokai to Oahu races in 2010, 2014 and 2015 beating the likes of Danny Ching. In addition he paddles with Tahiti’s EDT V6 (OC6) crew and a winner of the Molokai Hoe and many great races back in Tahiti. In addition he, is a Super Aito V1 winner and runner up – the most gruelling solo paddle craft distance event on earth. Growing up on the mythlogical island of Bora Bora, surfing and paddling, Steeve’s natural ability, led him to move to Papeete to paddle and train with his EDT crew.

It’s getting colder and the dilemma for a paddleboarder in cold water or weather is finding the right clothing, wetsuits are designed to be comfortable being wet but if you don’t fall in they are way to thick, unflexible and warm.
Starboard has a solution for this, the brand new Allstar SUP Suit. It’s the future of cold water paddling, using hyper-flex, breathable technology to regulate and keep your body at optimum temperature while maintaining mobility and movement.

While the Boga SUP Yoga Board was somewhat of an exotic toy a few years ago, most of the big brands now have SUP Yoga Boards in their lineup.
Yoga on a SUP is a trend that cannot be ignored anymore. Fanatic has just launched a great new board for that. We tried it out and truly love it.
Wondering which board world’s fastest female paddler Annabel Anderson (formerly Starboard) is riding these days? After Annabel Andersons go to shaper Brian Szymanski and John Becker crossed from Starboard to Lahui Kai it only seemed a matter of time until she followed suit and in December 2014 it was officially announced that Annabel joined Lahui Kai.
One of the things that is really difficult when travelling around the world for SUP Races is to keep up with your training routine, you can’t travel with dumbells, might not have access to a gyms unless you choose a ***** start hotel. That’s why we love Annabel Andersons’ Bodyweight exercises so much.
Do you ask yourself…how much should I train? How do I improve my technique? What are the best nutrition and pacing strategies?
Here is a video of the Columbia Gorge Paddle Challenge 2015 in Hood River. The event was overshadowed by the death of Andres Pombo who fell off his board during a training run and was later found dead.
Much has been written about that. All we have to say is “Leashes save lives”.
After a few warm and “easy” years, the 2015 SUP 11 City Tour was back to it cold, rainy, windy self in 2015.
The athletes faced headwinds of 20-30knots, heavy rain and temperatures that were often below 15°C. The infamous 3 lakes were once again more like oceans than lakes. I suppose that is why the Slotenmeer is called Slotenmeer and not Slotenlake (“Meer” means “ocean”).
In cooperation with #standuptraveller Sup Tours Philippines is organizing specialized packages for stand up paddlers wanting to see the philippines and explore jungle rivers, lagoons, hidden coves and mesmerizing reefs.

You have done all the rivers and lakes or beaches in your neighbourhood and are looking for a new adventure? How about a nightpaddle?
It is this time of the year again…..On the same day as Fanatic, Naish announced their 2016 SUP Range.
Javelin Carbon boards are suitable for ambitious racers and professional competition. They feature a state-of-the-art rocker line and newly developed deck and bottom shape for lightning fast acceleration and ultimate gliding speed.
Available in 24”, 26” and 28” widths, the newly refined Javelins feature a carbon construction which combines the impact resistance of a wood sandwich deck with the lightweight and stiffness of a carbon bottom and carbon rail—providing even more direct board feel.
Available in 24” and 26” widths, the hydrodynamically advanced dihedral nose shape efficiently splits water off the sides of the board, letting the hull move smoothly through windy open water conditions. The newly developed rocker allows the rider to catch glides—even in the roughest conditions—with minimal trim adjustment.
Naish is also introducing the new 2016 Naish Paddle Collection. Engineered for maximum performance and heightened durability, the 2016 line strikes the ideal balance between strength, power and flex. Using cutting-edge materials and shaping techniques, our paddles feature refined constructions, precision blade shaping and are available in a variety of sizes to optimize your stroke. Whether for touring, racing, wave riding or all-around use, Naish paddles offer unmatched performance, quality and value.
A great fit for a wide variety of riders, the fast and easy-to-paddle Glide Touring boards provide enhanced directional stability, making them the ultimate choice for all-around SUP touring.
The newly developed outline—with its wider nose and tail—increases stability in a variety of conditions. Its displacement bow effortlessly pierces through chop, while a deep single-concave tail creates added directional stability, enabling riders to complete more strokes per side. In addition, even volume distribution creates a much larger sweet spot, helping riders of every skill level take their touring experience to the next level.
The New Glide Touring boards also feature plugs in the nose area which can accommodate a bungee storage system for precious cargo.
The Odysseus series is designed for all-around cruising, exploring, learning the basics and riding small waves. Featuring an extra wide outline throughout the nose, mid-section and tail, these boards provide phenomenal stability.
New to the lineup, the 11’2” features an M8 universal insert, which allows for use as a windsurf board as well. Additionally, the Odysseus also features plugs in the nose area which can accommodate a bungee storage system for precious cargo. Also available as a Soft Top for schools and rental centers.

The 2016 Fanatic SUP Collection is now online here: http://www.fanatic.com/sup/. There is a lot of new stuff, especially in the area of inflatables.
The new super lightweight double layer light technology makes the boards about 30% lighter yet stiffer. There are new shapes like stubby air for waves and rapid air for white water and there is the brand new Fly Air Fit board for Yoga and Fitness which can be combined with a platform which can connect up to 8 boards.
The inflatables also come with new wheely backpacks and a completely re-designed powerpump.
The Raceboard lineup has been split into the Strike for Flatwater and the Falcon for the ocean. The Strike has a deep cutting bow and is only available in 14′, the Falcon has a more rounded nose shape which is better for ocean racing.
The new Carbon Pro paddle only weights 500g and there now also is a carbon fiber paddle for kids. You can download the new catalog here.
Within a week the SUP community learned that 2 big SUP Events of the 2015 season have been cancelled, the Battle of the Paddle and the SUP Worldcup Fehmarn.
The 2015 Painkiller Cup took place last Saturday, January 17th in the British Virgin Islands. It is a 14 mile downwind race from Beef Island, Tortola to infamous Soggy Dollar Bar (which takes it’s name from the sailors swimming ashore – since there is no dock – to spend wet bills) on Jost van Dyke.

2014 Molokai 2 Oahu Paddleboard World Championships
At this time and day, SUP Races are won by seconds or less. Surely choosing the right SUP race fin can make a difference that is somewhere within that range….
Basic principles for choosing a SUP fin:
- The more volume a fin has, the more stability/traction it gives, in return, turning gets harder!
- The more volume a fin has, the more drag it creates. Longer fins create more drag vs. shorter fins with same volume (the longer the leading edge in water, the more drag)
- Smaller fins: Faster. Larger fins: Slower (in flat conditions with same rider).
- Bigger, heavier, stronger riders can ride / need bigger fins!
- If your board is narrow / feels tippy and conditions are choppy: choose a bigger fin!
- If your board is wide / stable but feels slow, try a smaller fin!
- Shape of fin is much more important than weight / material!
- The best fin is useless if it does not properly fit your board and is loose. Make sure the fin fits your board 100% (does not move in the finbox).
- When doing a race in areas with seagrass (hello Eleven City Tour…): Use a weed fin!
- Bigger Board: Smaller fin – Smaller Board: Larger fin
- Is your balance good: Choose a smaller fin! not so good? Rider a larger fin!
- Can you paddle straight? Choose a smaller fin! not so much? A larger fin will help you stay on track. The time you loose paddling zigzag or switching too often is usually much more than the time you loose due to the drag of a larger fin.
- Fin box position: the further your fin box is in the front, the deeper your fin needs to go.
Don’t forget the big picture:
- A fin that is too small for your size / ability will cost much more time via not going straight, falling off vs. the time it saves by being smaller
- A fin that catches weed will slow you much more down than the shape can make you faster
- A fin that does not properly fit your board (shakes left and right) will cost much more time than it saves by having a better shape vs. fin that came with board.
Some exemplary SUP Race Fin Shapes and my personal POV on them
Danny Ching SUP Fin:
This fin gives a lot of stabilty but is not too long, so drag is still ok. I use it for long distance open ocean races.
Slater Trout Fin
good compromise between speed and stability. Easier to turn vs. Danny Ching fin. I use it for beach races with many buoy turns.
FCS Weed Fin
my choice for 11 City Tour (but might go with smaller one next time). It is great as no weed gets stuck to it and you can paddle on one side for a long time but it is 10″ long, so it creates quite a big of drag, since my board has quite a lot of volume for my weight and size, I think I could ride it a bit shorter.
Futures Fins KEEL SUP Race Fin
with only 44square inch and a very low profile and little leading edge, this is maybe the smallest and fastest (in terms of drag) race fin. It is designed for flatwater racing, long straight lines (not turns in the surf)

Kai Lenny (Naish) manages to edge to victory today in the World Series Sprint Racing in a familiar battle to the bitter end with friend and adversary, Connor Baxter (Starboard).
Last weekend the M2M race took place on Hawaii, it is a 42.8km (27 mile) downwind race across the channel from Maui to Molokai. It is kind of a form check for the upcoming M20 race. Connor Baxter won it for the 5th time in a row, followed by Kai Lenny and Dave Kalama (all unlimited). His time was 3 hours and 4 minutes – only 9 minutes off his official record time (2 hours 55 minutes) which is great considering the conditions were not as epic this year.

You don’t need to travel to the Bahamas or Costa Rica just to enjoy stand up paddling or SUP for short, because there’s a place in the United States that offers many opportunities for this water sport. This haven for stand up paddle fanatics is Austin, which is also known for its vibrant bingo scene. With many bingo halls dotting the city including Austin Bingo, people can easily get their daily dose of this game.
Bingo is a popular recreation in the United States because of its simple game rules and attractive rewards. Based on a study, there are more than 16.7 million people in the country that played bingo in 2011 and over $533.8 million worth of prizes were won that same year. Out of the total amount of winnings, Texas Lottery Commission received $29 million from its Charitable Bingo.
With the combination of bingo and stand up paddling, organizers can raise funds for different charitable institutions. There is a possibility of having a huge attendance in such event because of the number of bingo and SUP enthusiasts in Austin.
So how can you combine both recreations? It is simple. All you need to do is find a location where you can hold your bingo SUP charity event. A good choice is at the Highland Lakes, which is a chain of seven lakes in Austin. But you need to buy stand up paddle equipment at SUP ATX and bingo supplies at Thompson Allstate Bingo Supply for your charity event.
Bingo can be played while the stand up paddlers are resting on their boards. Instead of putting numbers on the cards, you can put some SUP terms and tricks. The first one to complete a straight line wins the game.
You can spread the word for this upcoming event through your friends at Bingogodz and CenTex SUP so they can invite their family and friends as well. If you plan to hold this event under the stars, then you can organize a charity bingo at Austin Paddle Sports, which is known for its SUP Glow Night Tours held every Friday night.

On the 7th of September the first edition of the Bruges SUP Classic will take place @ the Sint-Pietersplas in Bruges.
Bart is the man for crazy adventures / tough challenges on a SUP. In 2011, he paddled from Hawaii’s Big Island to Kauai, 5 days and nights, 483 km across the Hawaiian archipelago in wind, waves and with the strongest currents on the planet. UPDATE!
What’s SUP?
SUP is short from Stand Up Paddling. It is an emerging global sport with a Hawaiian heritage. The sport is an ancient form of surfing, and reemerged as a way for surfing instructors to manage their large groups of students, as standing on the board gave them a higher viewpoint. There are hints that the ancient pacific islanders already used boards to ride waves and move on the water. According to that SUP was an early conjunction of the traditional Polynesian disciplines canoeing and surfing. With the invention of lightweight shortboards into the surfing scene, SUP felt a bit into oblivion but has recently been rediscovered and now is the fastest growing watersports since the 80s windsurf boom.
People of every age and ability can learn to Stand-Up Paddle on any kind of water surface. Only condition: Being a good swimmer, in case you fall in. The eco-friendly new popular sport offers a perfect, holistic workout which is easy on the joints. In order to move the board, the whole body has to be under tension so it is a strong ‘core’ workout. But it’s not just the core, the legs are needed to balance the board and the arms do the paddling. So it is a very effective total body workout, which will change your body for the better within weeks. Plus, discovering stunning scenery from a SUP is much more fun than being on the treadmill…
First Steps
Lessons on St. John, USVI
I had been paddling for about half a year when I met Annabel Anderson, the world’s fastest female paddler. She showed me the right technique and I have been hooked on SUP ever since. I have passed on this technique to many beginners, who are having a great time and start to even beat me in races. I am sad when I see people helplessly drifting around, having the wrong paddle length, holding the paddle backwards and doing a stroke that is not efficient and bad for the body. I would love to teach you what I learned from Annabel, to make sure you have fun and are safe on the water!”
Is Paddleboarding difficult?
Not at all. SUP is so much easier than sports like tennis or skiing which can take weeks or months to learn. After a 2 hour lesson with us, 95% of all paddlers can safely paddle without falling off and are good to go and explore the St. John waters on there own, without getting into trouble even if it is windy. While the entry is easy, there is no limit, experienced paddlers have paddled from UK to Netherlands, from Puerto Rico to the US, from Ibiza to Spain or Spain to Africa.

I travelled to SUP Races in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, Spain, Italy, Holland and the UK, killing one campervan and being robbed while asleep in the van on a French highway parking lot.
And this will be one of the highlights of the German events: The NP SUP 4 Lake Trophy with races on 4 different Bavarian lakes. Race number #2 at Brombach See (Friday) is in the same location and weekend as the Lost Hills International SUP Race with 7500 EUR Prize Money (Sunday). See updated info below!
After a brief spell of autumn on Saturday with 12 degrees and heavy rain, the summer returned to Bavaria right in time for the 2nd Nordbad SUP Contest in Tutzing, Lake Starnberg. Over 60 riders were greeted with cloudless sky and zero wind, this meant the lake which can be really mean and choppy was flat and peaceful – perfect conditions for the racers but also the general public who could try out SUPs from leading brands for free.
The waiting period for the F.one Mediterranean SUP Surfing Championships are 3 weekends in February 2012.
On the weekend of Sept 2nd 2011 the highest SUP Race in Europe took place on beautiful Lake Silvaplana (1815m).
Peter and Abel are back in the civilization – with mixed feelings. Somehow happy to be warm and safe, somehow sad that the adventure is over. Abel is back in Czech Republic, where he works and Peter is home in Gosdorf. They did not make it to their destination, the Black Sea, but they paddled an impressive 700km in 2 weeks.
Spending most nights outside, in a tent by the river. From Austria to Hungary, to Croatia, to Serbia. Their journey ended in Beldgrad. The forces were against them, the temperature was constantly below freeze, they saw the sun only once as it was constantly foggy, the rivers had an historically low water level and the strange Hungarian Police also did not help…
Yesterday, we got the chance to have a sneak peek at the Puma Laird Board in sunny Spain….
This weekend the last event of the 2011 Naish SUP Tour took place in Paris. A SUP Race in the heart of Paris! A very unique opportunity to pass all the key sights like Louvre, Centre Pompidou and Eifel Tower on river Seine on a SUP, as normally paddling on Seine is strictly forbidden, it’s quite dangerous because there is heavy boat traffic.
After a few delays, they started their trip last Friday, November 16th, on the custom-shaped boards by Abel (17’ long, 30.5” wide) which were specifically designed to carry the 60kg of luggage. The water level is low as it hasn’t rained for weeks so the trip is slower than expected and yes, it’s cold, -3°C during the day, much colder at night when they camp out in the wilderness close to the river.
“I wanted to do a paddle that is a bit different, that would take me to places I haven’t been before….”
Fanatic International Team Rider Charlie paddled over 240 Miles, in 6.5 days, passed over 120 locks and ate more than 5kg of flapjacks to raise money for Cancer Research. He used the Fanatic 14′ downwind board. Watch the video and read his story:
Our Australian Colleagues from SUP VIC just conducted a nice test of 12’6 stock race boards. They used a 500m flatwater course, consisting of 250m into the wind, a turn around a buoy and then 250m of downwind back. The conditions were flat water and low wind.
18 year old Connor Baxter puts on a legendary performance here in Fiji to win the epic long distance from Natadola Beach to Namotu Island ahead of a stellar fleet of athletes. Taking an early lead out of the gate, Connor navigated his way successfuly down the 22 mile course to win the first leg of the first stop on the 2012 Stand Up World Series.
SUP pioneer Peter Bartl (www.paddelsurfen.at) a jack of all trades and always up to something new. He founded the ASF, Austrian SUP Federation, developed the first German-language SUP-Instructor training , wrote the first German-language book on SUP and much more…
Now he is planning a big trip, of course, by SUP. He and his friend and shaper Abel Cathelineau plan to paddle from Graz in Styria (Austria) to the Black Sea. Ironically, in the cheerless November. Why? Because he does not like mosquitoes…..
More than 130 paddlers competing in three classes (Badass, Weekend Warrior and Keikis) sprinted off the start line of the Paddle Royal – San Juan SUP Cup on Saturday, October 29th to kick off the weekend’s events. After two days of intense and exhausting racing it that combined the results of a long distance race and several sprint races, it was Florida’s Chase Kosterlitz riding his Fanatic 14’ Flatwater dominating the 14’ division and the Badass Overall. Anthony Vela from Huntington Beach California and riding a custom Boardworks Morelli and Melvin won the 12’6 division and took 2nd overall while Puerto Rico’s own Heather Baus, on a locally built MHL, claimed first place overall among the women, beating by the narrowest of margins, World Champion Candice Appleby who rode her signature model Surftech/Bark.
Brouwersdam in the South-West of the Netherlands has a lot to offer for water sport enthusiasts, thousands of them drive up to Brouwersdam for sailing, windsurfing and kite surfing every weekend. No matter what kind of water sport activity, Brouwersdam has seen it all. This year at the end of the season on de 22 of October however an event was held which did raise some eyebrows; the Night of Brouwersdam is a Stand Up Paddle race after dark and on open sea!
On the weekend of October 15th and 16th the Spanish Championships took place in Somo. The swell forecast for Sunday was great, so the race and wave competition were switched.
With over 900 racers and about 15,000 spectators, Battle of the Paddle, which took place in Dana Point, California on the weekend of Sept 24/25 2011 was probably the biggest and most important SUP event this year. Here is our race report, with a slight bias towards how our European friends did.
Want to increase your SUP strength and flexibility? Looking for some workouts to do before, after or in between paddles? Want to get a dream body?
Annabel Anderson, Starboard Team Rider and one of the fastest female Stand-Up Paddlers in the world, reveals her best exercises on www.sup-guide.com. The can easily be done from home, all you need is your body weight and a paddle. The exercises might look easy, but they are really tough and effective. Look at the videos and you will know why Annabel is so fast!
The videos were shot right after Annabel's victory in the London Boat Show Indoor SUP sprint challenge. So please excuse the chaotic setting, we decided to prioritize the quality of the exercises over high-end production.
We have grouped the exercises into 3 areas:
- Warm-Up: best exercises to be done before paddling
- Flexibility and Mobility: best done after paddling
- Strength: Increase your sup fitness and strength on those days in between paddles
more exercises coming soon, like us on facebook.com/supguide for updates!

It was crazy, we were so close through 220km of paddling it was 2 seconds then 10 then 4 I couldn’t keep up! I think we finished up 10 seconds apart?

Europe's biggest free beach and watersports festival is back for another year of fun and raising money for charities and will also feature a SUP Race.
This weekend the "King of the Island" SUP race took place in beautiful Bergeggi. I was on my way down there but my campervan started loosing oil big time after Brennero, I tried refilling every 50km but it soon became apparent this is a major leak, so I stopped at Nogaredo Ovest at noon Saturday, found a nice parking space and even a hydraulic hoist (banco elevatore – a bit of Italian helps….) at the Shell station there. While asking friends also experienced in driving old T3s for advice via Facebook chat, SMS & phone, and keeping Annabel and Luigi updated on where I am, I already got a feeling I would most likely miss a truly great event.

GERMAN SUP CHALLENGE – Event # 2
Paddle Cologne, Blackfoot Beach, Cologne, 14.-15.5.2011
The 2nd tour stop of the German SUP Challenge took place in Cologne, at the beautiful beach club setting of Blackfoot Beach. The weather was fantastic and the location featured as much Caribbean flair as you can get in Germany: White sand, palmtrees, loungers etc. The Race was a 3.8km round course along a few small lakes connected via small paths.
Our friend and top international paddleboarder Kiwi Annabel Anderson was dearly missed in Podersdorf, but after reading this story, no one will blame her. She added another first to her ever expanding portfolio of achievements in recent months by paddling the longest distance in a 24 hour period while crossing from the Baleric island of Ibiza to Spain on Friday together with Fred Bonnef (France) and Belar Diaz (Spain).
We have just been informed that there will be no SUP Worldcup in Hamburg this year, as the main sponsor Jever pulled out. But the organizers will do everything to make the event happen in 2012 again. This is sad news. So we have to stay wtih reminiscinding by looking at the 2010 pictures and videos….
A small river in Bavaria. Carsten calls it his “Bavarian Amazonas”.

GERMAN SUP CHALLENGE
Race Around Scharfenberg Tegeler See Berlin, the first of the 5 German SUP challenge Races took place in best sunny weather this weekend!
Thomas Oschwald has an amazing plan. Beginning of June he will go on a fascinating SUP adventure. He will attempt to paddle from his home in Mollis, Switzerland to the Atlantic Ocean – and back. 5000 km in total. This would be world record. The current official record is held by Tom Jones who standup paddled the length of California from Oregon to Mexico (1,250 Miles in 90 consecutive days). After a lot of tests and research he found the right board for this amazing adventure. “The Tahoe Zephyr SUP is super light, fast and perfect for my purpose” says Thomas.

Isar – A beautiful turquoise green river on a grey day at low water. Yes, it would have been gorgeous, if it wasn’t for all the litter.
Eastbourne Extreme is one of the biggest FREE extreme sports festivals in the UK. . Featuring a huge line up of air, land and water based outdoor pursuits, it takes place over 2 days on Eastbourne's Eastern seafront from 10am to 5pm each day.
Portugal is t is probably one of the best paddleboarding destinations on the continent, for its sheer variety of waters in which to paddle and all within easy striking distance of the country’s capital.

It was getting warmer in Munich, we had sun and almost 15° Celsius in Munich, so Petra (sup-guide.de), Etienne (munichstanduppaddling.com) and Carsten (imaginesurfboards.com) decided to head for a sunset paddle and BBQ on yet another Bavarian mountain lake.
The Munich SUP Crew likes to go to places where no man has paddled before. So, while everybody else was celebrating fasching (carnival) or curing the fasching hangover, they decided to paddle to the place where Ludwig II, King of Bavaria, sometimes also called “Mad King Ludwig” was born in 1864: Palace Nymphenburg.
Last week we had the chance to test the new Fanatic Fly Race 12’6″ 27.75″ in carbon. It is a narrower, faster version of last years successful 12’6″ 30.5″ model, designed for lighter, more experienced riders.
Mexico is a beautiful country mostly know for the beautiful beaches, and it has plenty of them, as it faces 3 coasts: The Carribean, the Gulf and the Pacific. A less know beauty are it's rivers, and there are plenty of them which are great for exploration by SUP
Last week, stand up paddler Karen Wrenn became the first person to paddle between all 8 of the Channel Islands, consecutively, off the coast of Southern California.
Everybody who has been travelling with a SUP knows what for a pain this is. If you are tired of carrying around your SUP, you might want to consider an inflatable.
SIMPLE ISUPS
Have little rubber fins that to not give much traction and no special fibers or stringers that make the board rigid. They bend like bananas for heavier riders but can still be good fun for lighter riders and make the sport easily accessible.
PREMIUM ISUPS
have a full size fin with US Finbox System and better traction. They usually also have sytems that make them more rigid.
The new inflatable Touring and Raceboards for example from Fanatic or Mistral are really good.
What is better?
Inflatables have gotten really good but they will always be slower and cost more energy than fixed boards of the same shape
I would always choose an Inflatable race board (e.g. Fanatic Fly Air Race) over an Allround SUP with the rounded Shape (e.g. Fly Pure).
I would always choose an carbon race board over an inflatable race board.
When to buy an inflatable SUP
- you have no space to transport or store a fixed board
- you want to ride on rivers/whitewater
- you want to hike up to a mountain lake with your board
- you consider pumping the board up a fun part of your warm-up
- you want to do yoga on your board
- you want to take your kids or dog on the board (get the Fly Air Touring 12″ x 34″ from Fanatic)
- you want more workout in less time
- all your friends or your partner are on ISUPS too

Athletes will experience the ultimate challenge as they paddle 220 kilometers (136 miles) in five days with weather conditions varying from windless, beautiful and sunny to cold, rainy and stormy. Besides the ultimate challenge the SUP 11-City Tour is also an unique experience. Over 100 national and international paddlers get to know Friesland from the water. Open fields with windmills, cows, and sheep will present itself along the water ways exchanged by eleven historical cities built from 1700 onwards. Participants paddle the original waterways, where the ice skaters started conquering this historical tour 101 years ago on frozen waters. SUP 11-City Supporters come from all over the country and from all over the world to Friesland to encourage participants from bridge to bridge, and from town to town.
Germany’s sizzling Capital City just got even more exciting….
Starting on April 21, TU Berlin and superflavor are starting a SUP-Course & Rental program at the aquatic sports centrum of the University. There will be 1.5 hour introduction courses where you will be taught the basics of Stand Up Paddling (equipment, paddling, turns etc.)
In summer, we call this tour “Bavarian Amazonas”. We have been thinking about paddling it at full moon for quite some time, and this weekend the forecast looked OK. Not good, it was overcast, but there was 85% chance of seeing the moon between 20.00 and 24.00. So Petra (sup-guide.com) and Etienne (Munich Stand Up Paddling) decided to give it a try.

London has many beautiful sights and landmarks to offer, but seeing even a couple of them on one day can be very stressful. So imagine paddling past the House of Parliament, the London Eye, the City, London Bridge etc. all by yourself in total quietness on a SUP.
Glaring city lights, a scary bridge underpass, a waterfall, a fairy-tale like Hänsel and Gretel house or nightpaddling on Munich’s Canal.
The canal at the south end of Munich is the ideal place for a quick evening paddle. There are parking spaces only 15m from the water, the artificial edge of the canal is very low, so it’s easy to get in and out. The distance you can paddle until you hit a hydro-electric power plant is short, only about 3km, but the current is reasonable strong, so if you have paddled that back and forth twice, you have had a good workout.

Saturday December 4th 2010 was a historic day for the SUP world with the first ever SUP race across Paris. Here we finally go with our report and some amazing pics.
MUNICH SUP’s “Boot” Review (Water Sport and Boating Expo, Dusseldorf)
The “Boot“ in Dusseldorf is one of the biggest water sport Expos in the world, and had almost 1800 companies represented in 17 halls. Exhibitions ranged from Stand Up Paddling, windsurfing, wakeboarding, jet skis, motorboats, yachts and super yachts, to function clothing, navigational devices, and every imaginable water sport and boating accessorie available on the market.
Due to our geographic location (water temp @ our local riverwave in Munich currently being 3.5°C), we are all into cold water and river waves. So we could not help but investigate a bit, after coming across some amazing shots of a wave in Alaska. Imagine a 5-mile ride. Catching a wave at breakfast, and riding it till lunch? How cool is that?
FULL RESULTS of all Rounds
Congratulations Annabel Anderson and John Hibbard! Here are the full results plus some more photos from this exciting indoor race!
From Jan14th to 16th the world’s first indoor Stand Up Paddle Race took place in London. A race on 12″6 boards, in a 120m x 30m indoor Pool, that was a challenge for both athletes and those organizing the event.
Starboard Team Rider Annabel Anderson had met the Munich SUP crew in Hamburg at the Jever World Cup where she finished 2nd. She had stayed in touch with Petra, who also paddels on the canal in London and had seen some photos from the scenic tours through Bavaria. So one early Saturday morning in December, she headed south for some more paddling adventures.

The London canal is great for paddling, also at night as there is a lot of light from the surounding bildings. But the water is quite filthy, so you better don’t fall in….
